In Bangladesh, countless communities face overwhelming challenges year after year due to natural disasters. Every year, from intense heat waves to devastating floods and cyclones, these frequent events get more severe and cause unbearable destruction. Many communities don’t even get the chance to recover before the next disaster hits, and this continues every year. People lose their homes, suffer from the damage to crops, and the death of domestic animals.
On the other hand, elements like plastics and polythene waste are the root causes of air, soil, and water pollution. These materials directly harm life and ecosystems on our planet, causing food and clean water crises and damaging human health.
The Climate Adaptation program designed by Enroute Foundation is all about tackling these issues by delivering support and building resilience for vulnerable communities. As a part of the climate adaptation in Bangladesh, we prepare communities for the harsh realities of climate change and implement actions that support adaptation practices.
As part of our climate adaptation process, we encourage and support environmental sustainability by promoting tangible actions and environment-friendly practices within our communities. We focus on addressing the significant threat of plastic pollution, ways of removing and minimizing plastics, and management and recycling of plastic waste, particularly one-time usable plastics. We have pioneered the initiative of replacing one-time plastic tableware with 100% compostable and biodegradable areca leaf tableware.
Additionally, to recycle plastic wastes like bottles and polythene, we have introduced a sustainable solution named eco-bricks. Not limited to these, we have machinery that produces eco-chips made of crushed plastic for reuse in the manufacturing process. We actively contribute to cleaning programs at sea beaches and mangrove forest areas to prevent future threats of pollution.
We conduct awareness campaigns to educate the public and shift consumers into adopting greener alternatives.
To encourage green initiatives in our community, one of the key actions includes large-scale tree plantation, supporting Carbon Reduction initiatives in our country, and contributing to improving environmental health. Our other approach, encouraging businesses to adopt sustainable practices such as using renewable energy and improving water and energy efficiency, not only supports environmental conservation but also fosters economic growth in harmony with ecological sustainability. Water and energy efficiency are prioritized, focusing on water-saving technologies and energy conservation, which reduce environmental impact and help communities adapt to climate change.
